The Red Earth American Indian Cultural Festival is a unique occasion where America's Northern and Southern tribes celebrate their heritage at one event. In full regalia, dancers represent the traditions of their people in one the world's most prestigious competitions, held each June in downtown Oklahoma City.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the Cherokee culture with a guided tour of the ancient village where they'll learn about the customs and history of the tribe as well as learn to shoot a blowgun, witness arrowhead and basket making demontstrations and try stickball for themselves.
Cheyenne Chief Black Kettle led a group of Southern Cheyenne who were camped along the banks of the Washita River in western Oklahoma in 1868 when the peaceful village was attacked at dawn by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his troops.  The site of this massacre is memorialized today at the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site in the town of Cheyenne. Miami is home to nine American Indian tribal nations, making powwow celebrations a staple of the local culture.  Visitors are welcome to attend and experience the rich American Indian heritage.
The 1829 log cabin that once belonged to Sequoyah, the Cherokee tribe member who is famous for developing the Cherokee alphabet, is preserved near Sallisaw.  The surrounding grounds are a lovely place for a picnic and historical exploration.
